Fortes Ice Cream Parlour

Just a stone’s throw from the Apartments is Fortes Ice Cream Parlour – a Cheddar institution.

The parlour is located in an old cloth mill, dating back to 1860. It was one of several mills long the course of the river Yeo.  Around 1970 the building underwent a change of use when the Forte family took over the site and it has remained in the family since that time

Fortes is renowned for its specialty ice-creams, all of which are made on the premises. Our knickerbocker glories and our ice cream sundaes have to be seen (and tasted!) to be believed. Our strawberry sundae, made with fresh local strawberries, is another dish to be relished.

At Fortes, we have always taken great pride in our traditional approach, as we believe in giving value for money and good service. We have ample seating inside and outside on our riverside patio overlooking the river Yeo and Cheddar Gorge.

In addition to ice creams, we also have a substantial varied hot and cold food menu, from snacks to mixed grills, available all day from 9:30am.  Another specialty is our cream teas, as we bake the scones fresh daily. These are available for picnic packs to take away, or for cream teas, to eat in.

Fortes is open from Easter until the end of October each year.
